School Reports
Reporting provides feedback to students, parents and other teachers about student progress. In a standards-referenced framework, teachers make professional judgements about student achievement. This is done at key points in the learning cycle.
The A–E grading scale or equivalent provides a common language for reporting. Teachers use the grading scale to report student levels of achievement. This applies to Stages 1 to 3 (Year 1-6).
A to E grades are not required for reporting on student achievement in Early Stage 1 (Kindergarten). Reports may describe student progress and achievement through teacher comments. Teachers should refer to a variety of information about student progress and achievement in relation to the outcomes assessed and the content taught up to the relevant point in time.
St Mary's Semester One reports will be available to parents on the afternoon of Wednesday 3rd July, Week 10. These will be available on Compass. Parent teacher interviews are not compulsory this semester, however, if parents wish to discuss their child's report they may do so by phoning the school office to make an appointment with their child's teacher.
About the Common Grade Scale
The A to E grade scale summarises the standard (or quality) of achievement associated with each grade. The scale describes:
- the depth of knowledge and understanding and
- the range of skills that students working at that standard typically show.
Grades are given for individual achievement. Students will get the grade that best matches the standard of their achievement. Teachers should consider all evidence gathered and should not be limited to a set number of children allocated to each grade within their class or school.
Grade | Description |
---|---|
A | The student has an extensive knowledge and understanding of the content and can readily apply this knowledge. In addition, the student has achieved a very high level of competence in the processes and skills and can apply these skills to new situations. |
B | The student has a thorough knowledge and understanding of the content and a high level of competence in the processes and skills. In addition, the student is able to apply this knowledge and these skills to most situations. |
C | The student has a sound knowledge and understanding of the main areas of content and has achieved an adequate level of competence in the processes and skills. |
D | The student has a basic knowledge and understanding of the content and has achieved a limited level of competence in the processes and skills. |
E | The student has an elementary knowledge and understanding in few areas of the content and has achieved very limited competence in some of the processes and skills. |

Chess Club runs each week in the Library at lunchtime. Some of our chess players represented St Mary's at an interschool competition on Monday and Wednesday. 180 students from 11 schools played across 4 divisions putting their critical thinking skills to the test. Our St Mary's teams played with great sportsmanship. Thanks to Mrs Crum for arranging the team for the competition. Congratulations to all involved.
Garden Club
We recently received a generous donation from Orange Edible Garden Trail. Our Environmental Leaders, Scarlett and Robert, accepted the $300 donation on behalf of the school at a recent school assembly. School-Wide Positive Behaviour for Learning (SPB4L)
School Arrival
In order to keep our students safe, please ensure that they enter the school each morning via the pedestrian gates. There is one gate on Park St, one on Byng St and a third at PCYC carpark. Pedestrians are not permitted to walk through the bus bay gates. If you drop your child off, on Byng St between the two bus bay gates, please remind them to walk along the footpath to the nearest pedestrian gate, taking care when crossing the driveway access to the bus bay. Please remind them not to walk through the bus bay.
Your support with this important safety matter is appreciated.
We keep our hands and feet to ourselves
Our focus for this week has been around safe and respectful behaviour. We teach and remind students that keeping our hands and feet to ourselves is respectful and helps to keep others safe.
We use kind words
Next week, we will be revising the expectations of respectful choices when we speak to others. The students will have regular reminders to always use kind words.
